Transaid is involved in vital life saving projects in Africa

The Problem

In sub-Saharan Africa, road deaths are the third biggest killer following HIV/Aids and malaria.

Through sharing best practise from the UK industry, Transaid is improving the standards of driving and transport knowledge amongst commercial drivers, ensuring they have the right skills and awareness to use the roads safely.

Having seen first-hand the level of driving on my first visit to Tanzania in June 2015 … it’s why I decided to become more involved, immediately volunteering to become an Ambassador for Transaid.

For example … would you want your coaches to be driven like this ??

It’s easy to see why there’s so many road deaths …

Crazy Coach Driving 1

While this video compilation may be all from Tanzania, it gives a feel for the very poor level of driving. Please note however that this is NOT out of the ordinary driving … this is how just about everyone drives all the time in sub Saharan Africa.

Crazy Coach Driving 2

This clip however is Tanzania … with the early morning departure of 120 coaches from Dar es Salaam coach station

The Solution

What is Transaid and what do they do?

Transaid is an international development organisation that transforms lives through safe, available, and sustainable transport. Founded by Save the Children, The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), and its Patron, HRH The Princess Royal, the international development organisation shares 25 years’ worth of expertise in 23 countries with partners and governments – empowering communities to build the skills they need to transform their own lives.

Transaid believes that every driver should be able to leave for a day’s work without the fear they may not come home because of dangerous vehicles and roads, or a lack of training. Every family should be able to access emergency healthcare in times of need. Every community should have the opportunity to build the skills they need to transform their future.

Transaid works in two core areas:

  • Supporting drivers, governments and training institutions to improve road safety.
  • Empowering communities to transform their own lives through access to vital services, such as healthcare.
